Read the Article

Following the U.S. Supreme Court decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, the U.S. Treasury and the IRS announced that legally married same-sex couples married in states that recognize same sex marriage will now be treated as married for federal tax purposes.

Under the new law, on or after Monday, September 16, legally married same-sex couples must now file their taxes as married filing separate or married filing jointly so if you haven’t filed your 2012 tax return yet, you still have a choice to file as married or single before September 16.

Not sure if you will benefit from filing your 2012 taxes as married or single?  You can check and see which option will save you more money using TurboTax TaxCaster 2012.
