Wondering where to find free online tax preparation and e-filing? The IRS is once again offering its Free File Alliance program. The program makes online tax preparation and e-filing available at no cost to low and middle-income taxpayers.

IRS Free File Alliance is a public-private partnership between the federal government and private tax preparation companies, including TurboTax maker Intuit.

What are the qualifications?

People with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $57,000 or less can select from more than a dozen online tax preparation services.  That means about 70 percent of all taxpayers, or 95 million people, are eligible to use these free services.

Intuit has supported the Tax Freedom Edition for nearly a decade. In that time, we’ve donated more than 22 million federal and state tax returns through TurboTax Tax Freedom Online to low and middle-income taxpayers.

For tax year 2011, anyone who qualifies for EITC, or is on active duty military with an AGI of $57,000 or less, or has an AGI of $31,000 or less can use TurboTax Online Tax Freedom Edition. Please note, Turbotax Online Freedom Edition is not to be confused with our Free file available on TurboTax.com if you don’t meet these qualifications.

This year, TurboTax Online Tax Freedom Edition includes free tax advice from CPAs, IRS Enrolled Agents and tax attorneys via phone or chat. TurboTax is the only tax software to offer live one-to-one tax advice to everyone.

Through the TurboTax Online Tax Freedom Edition site, TurboTax also offers free state tax preparation to qualified taxpayers who file returns in 22 states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

Free Fillable IRS Forms

Additionally, anyone, regardless of their income, can use the Free File Fillable Forms at irs.gov. It’s a free, simple forms utility that’s basically the electronic equivalent of a paper 1040 along with associated schedules and forms. You just type in the numbers and it does the math for you.

  1. I submitted my 2012 taxes after going back to work after my divorce and turbo tax shows taxes submitted before the april deadline but came back as rejected. I amended it and wanted to know will I still get an IRS refund. What happend is my Ex-husband clamied both our children as dependants, and was not aware he did that prior to filing before me. I still have valid Federal and State refund that is owed back to me and wanted to know at this time what i can do to receive my valid 2012 refund which was amended on turbo tax. I an new that this and in the past my husband (Legally divorced in 2009) use to file for us. I returned to work as teacher in 2012. Please help

    • Hi Karlie,
You should just mail your tax return in. I would send it certified return receipt with signature to make sure they received it. It will take them a few weeks to show it in their system then you can call and follow up.
      Thank you,
      Lisa Greene-Lewis

  2. Hello

I have been trying to file with the Freedom Edition, and NO matter what I do, I still get the Free edition, not the Freedom Edition. I have cleared cookies, waited hours, and sometimes even days, used other browsers and other computers, yet your site still refuses to allow me to use the Freedom Edition. I have used it it the past and used it last year. Can you please have someone look at what is going on, on your side?

  3. If Michigan is listed as one of the states where qualifying taxpayers can file for free on turbotax, why can’t does it keep sending me to the section to pay? I’m trying to help my two sons (ages 19 and 20, both students) and they each earned under $4000 in 2013. Why don’t they qualify for free?

  4. Last year, i noticed the program came to a point where it would not allow for me to split my refunds in seperate accounts, i really hope the program fixed that, i love that option and at a point, it asks about savings, but wouldn’t allow me to split my refund, have they fixed this issue?

  5. Will the Tax Freedom addition do a previous year’s taxes if you haven’t completed your taxes for a few years, or does it only do the tax year that just ended?

  6. Hi, for 2010-2011 I used the TurboTax Home & Business Edition when filing for my family and my sole-proprietorship. I just heard about TurboTax Freedom Edition, and my AGI qualifies for GA to use this version. If I sign up to use the Freedom Edition, will my info from last year on the Home & Business Edition be able to transfer, or will I have to start from scratch? Also, are there any business forms that I will not be able to file with the Freedom Edition?

  7. I have filed my return and it was accepted. When I click on the “save/print center” link, the page comes up, but there is nothing to click on. There is no icon or link to save my return. It’s been like that for the past 2 days.

  8. My wife and I are partners in an LLC, so technically a multi-partner LLC. Our AGI qualifies us for the Freedom Edition. Will we be able to use it (1065, K1, Sched. E)?
    Thank you.

    • Hi Webb,
Yes, Freedom will handle a K-1 and Schedule E if you meet income requirements. Regarding preparing your 1065 business return, you need to separately prepare your business tax return using our Business edition, not to be confused with Home and Business. You also have to prepare your business tax return before preparing your personal.
      Thank you,
      Lisa Greene-Lewis

  9. Id like to try the Freedom Edition. Can you explain, as I dont understand much about how computers actually work, what you mean by “online preparation”? Is my information stored somewhere that’s not on my computer? Is this safe? what if i have to go back and retrieve info etc or change things? (etc)

    thanks
    debra

    • yes its safe n secure n easy to use n its free, i been using it for years n its the only program i use because it has all the mandatory forms needed n over 350 deductions

  10. i like the ease of filling out my returns, have used turbo tax for 3 years now…was unable to print copies last year and am unable to print copies for THIS year…whats up with this?? if i cannot print copies for my files i will most likely not use turbo tax next year…fix this problem or loose my business

  11. I have my own business, (sole proprietor) and receive royalties from my photography. Will this edition work for me?

    Thanks for your reply

    Debra

    • Hi again,
Yes, if you own a business as a sole proprietor and file a Schedule C, you can prepare that form on the Turbo Tax Freedom Edition. It also support Schedule E for royalty income. The link to see which forms are available is on the right hand side of the screen at this link:http://turbotax.intuit.com/taxfreedom/ Just scroll down about halfway.
      Thanks,
      Karen

  12. Are there any system requirements necessary for downloading this software to a Mac computer?

Also, with this software can i still print and send in my tax return as a hard copy, or am I required to email it?

    • HI Debra – Are you asking about the Turbo Tax Freedom site? The Turbo Tax Freedom software is for online tax preparation only. You don’t need to download anything to your computer.
      Thanks,
      Karen

    • Hi wickedtuff – I am not familiar with Tax Slayer, but check to make sure you are on the right Turbo Tax site as I said above. If you are still having problems, contact tech support using the link I posted in your previous comment.
      Thank you,
      Karen

  13. TURBO TAX FREEDOM DOES NOT LET YOU FILE STATE FOR FREE. It says to do so to click on the ‘state’ tab and do it yourself, but that does not work. If you post in the community asking why, they tell you it’s not free. But the NYstate.gov site has a link to it for free filing.

  15. I have already used Turbo Tax to file my Federal, when I saw that I am eligible for the free state filing. How do I access the free state? If I try to continue it wants to charge me?

    • Hi Kathy – The site should be up and running. I just tested it and it is working for me. Have you tried a different browser? Or maybe clearing your cookies…
      http://www.taxfreedom.com
Try that and let us know if you are still having problems.
      Thanks,
      Karen

  16. Hi, I recieved an email saying that my state taxes were rejected due to a missing signature. When I try to log in to turbo tax the page wont load what so ever. I tryed three differnt computers and I get nothing. Was wondering if there was something else I could try

    Thanks

    • Hi Cyle – Did you also try different browsers such as Firefox or Chrome? If so, you may need to contact TurboTax Tech Support to help determine what’s going on. Here’s the link for you: https://turbotax.intuit.com/support/contact/

You will be given the option to call or chat.
They should be able to help you out!
      Thanks,
      Karen

    • Hi Donna,
Blog post are date sensitive and the post you are looking at is from last season. TurboTax Freedom will be ready for you to file on 1/30. The same day the IRS is accepting e-filed tax returns.
      Thank you,
      Lisa Greene-Lewis

    • My aunt also used it on that day for her’s but like you when I went back the next day to do mine I couldn’t…..very curious as to why also…

  17. My co worker told me she was able to do her taxes with the Turbo Tax Freedom edition on the 17th of January. When I went in on the 18th of January it was closed down. Was it open for one day and why?

    • Hello Ms. Hall – I heard some people were able to access the TurboTax Freedom edition for a brief time. I am not sure why that was. The IRS has not yet accepted returns for processing though. The fully functioning version will be available on Jan 30th as that is the day the IRS will begin to accept returns for filing.
      Thanks,
      Karen

    • Hi Tina,
TurboTax Freedom edition will be ready on 1/30 the same day IRS begins accepting tax returns. You can file with our federal free edition now.
      Thank you,
      Lisa Greene-Lewis

      • Hi Jessica,
Blog posts are date sensitive so this is a post from last year. We will be posting a brand new blog post. Thank you for your feedback.
        Lisa Greene-Lewis

    • thanks lisa i will waituntil then because the edition offered now does not offer the forms scedule C and schedule SE that i need, ill wait until then, thanks so much

  18. Does Turbotax FREEDOM only complete the 1040 federal form? Or do you also complete Schedule A, C, SE and D and 4562? I notice that you SUPPORT these forms – does that mean that you also complete them? I also have to complete Form 982 – which I will do separately, as you do not support it…… I will need to be able to print all this out so I can mail it in tonight. I am using your FREEDOM EDITION (I qualify) – should I use a PAID version to file everything? Please explain!

  19. Hi Lisa. And thank you for answering my question b4. Do I have to create another account in order to do the Freedom Edition? I tried logging into the Freedom Edition using my current email address, which I had used for the regular TurboTax, but it looked like I was redirected to the regular TurboTax site. Do I have to make another email account now? And if I re-enter the federal return info, how do I stop the federal from being filed again?

  20. Hi. It’s coming down to the ‘wire’ so to speak. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to NOT pay for my state taxes to be done thru TurboTax. I filled-out our Federal taxes back in early February thru regular free TurboTax, & didn’t know there was anything called TurboTax Freedom Edition, until I went to the Indiana state tax site. We qualified for the EIC and would have qualified for the free state taxes to be done. Is there a way that we can do our state taxes thru the Freedom Edition after having done the federal thru regular TurboTax?

    • Hi Ann,
If you do qualify for TurboTax Freedom you should be able to do your state. You will just have to re-enter your federal information on the TurboTax Freedom site since it is a different website from our TurboTax.com site.
Please remember to go to our Freedom site @ turbotax.intuit.com/taxfreedom/
      Thank you,
      Lisa Greene-Lewis

    • Hi Michelle,
Sorry you are having difficulties. You have to clear your browser’s cashe, cookies, and history.
      Thank you,
      Lisa Greene-Lewis

  21. I have started the TurboTax Freedom online. I started the return; trying to setup an account. Is there a problem with the form that is required to be used to set up the account? There appears to be a problem with the form.

    • Hi Marie,
Did TurboTax Freedom end up working for you? What browser are you using? Also try clearing your cache and cookies.

      Thank you,
      Lisa Greene-Lewis

  22. I started to complete my federal and then started the state return on the TurboTax Freedom website, now when I login, I either get directed to regular TurboTax website, or it shows me what my 2010 return was. Where did all of my information go for my 2011 return? I want to finish it. This is very frustrating.

    • Hi Karl,
You probably need to clear your cache/cookies in your browser. I would try that first and then try going to the TurboTax Freedom site from a clear browser. If you are still having difficulty please get in the program and go to a live tax advice agent so they can talk you through it.
      Thank you,
      Lisa Greene-Lewis

  23. I have filled out every thing under another version that has a fee. only to find that if we r military it is free… is there anyway to transfer this… we filed with yall last year for free??? thank you!

    • Hi Lori,
If you qualify for TurboTax Freedom you can delete or not save the information under TurboTax.com and go to the TurboTax Freedom website. Sorry you cannot transfer the info, but TurboTax Freedom is a different website and program. Go to http://www.turbotax.intuit.com/taxfreedom/

      Thank you,
      Lisa Greene-Lewis

  24. After I log in on the tax freedom page, whether I enter old login info or try to create a new account, it sends me to TurboTax’s regular page and asks me to either log on or choose which turbotax I want to use. Any idea what’s going on? I don’t’ want to get looped in to having to pay for turbotax, since I qualify for the tax freedom. I’m using Mac OSX 10.6.8 and firefox 10.0.2.
    Thanks!

    • Hi RKS,
We are happy you qualify and are using TurboTax Freedom. I too have a Mac and had the opposite issue when I was trying to test getting on the Freedom site. My computer kept going to Freedom even though I was trying to get into TurboTax.com. You need to clear your cookies and log out and log back in. Also maybe try another browser.
      Thank you,
      Lisa Greene-Lewis

  25. Well, let me try this again… I was having this same problem using Firefox 10 and 8 and IE9. I was getting the ‘Turnaway’ page stating mid January… then I cleared my browser History/ cache( which I hadn’t done in a few months)… After clearing my Browser history it went to the ‘I Qualify! Start Now’ page after figuiring that out I checked Firefox 8 and 10, IE 8 and 9, and Google Chrome. It came up to the Start now page on all… so if you are still having this issue try clearing you browser History. Hope this helps!
I tried posting this comment about a week ago and for a couple of days it was tagged as awaiting moderation or something like that and then it disappeared…

  26. Just an FYI for anyone that like me does use Firefox( I hate IE)… It does work in Firefox. But I had to clear my browsers cache/ history. Which I hadn’t done in probably about 6 months. So when I tried to go to http://turbotax.intuit.com/taxfreedom/ it was pulling up the ‘Available mid-January 2012’ page from browser history. It also comes up/ works in Google Chrome. HTH

    • Just to verify/ clarify I just checked Internet Explorer 9 and it came up to the ‘I qualify! Start Now’ page. So if you are still getting the ‘Available mid-January 2012′ page, try clearing you browser Cache/ history. HTH

  27. I’m using this service to file my federal taxes. It asks me for information that will later be used to file my state taxes. However, I don’t want to use the service to file my state taxes (I’ll just file for free at utah.gov). Can I bow out following the federal filing? Or, once I start the process, am I required to pay for the state filing in order to receive my federal filing for free? Thanks!

    • Hi Carla,
No you have the option of only filing your federal return, it’s just easier to go ahead file your state, because all of your federal information easily transfers to your state.
      Thank You,
      Lisa Greene-Lewis

  28. Ha! Just figured out that it only works in Internet Explorer, not Firefox. You should add that to the “turnaway” page!!

    • Don’t forget the Phone Tax Rolrox. The most braizze and deliberately impossible to assess fairly, stealth tax yet.Was that some greasy twat’s economics PhD thesis or just inspired by years of punitive taxation by arsewipes?

  29. I have internet explorer 8 and 9. Internet explorer 9 says mid january while version 8 brings up the website. It does not work with IE 9.

    • Hi Hannah,
Hopefully you have been able to get into the site. I was always able to get in using FireFox.
      Thank you,
      Lisa Greene-Lewis

  30. no, this website is not up, and calling turbo tax is worthless also.they don’t have a clue, because obviously I’m not the only one having this problem. I’ve read stuff about changing your browser after someone from turbotax told me the tax freedom edition was up. i thought that i was on the tax freedom edition but found out that i was in the deluxe edition.

  31. The TurboTax Freedom says that it will be temporarily unavailable. When will it be up again? It’s Jan 30th, 2012 now, and I need it to file my tax return for NC.

  32. The freedom edition still says it will be available mid January. We are PAST Mid- Jan now and it’s still not .
Any Real idea when it will be up?
