Sometimes outstanding debts will cause a refund adjustment. This can happen on the Federal and/or State refund. In either case a letter stating the reason for change will be sent to you from the taxing agency. The notification can show up after the refund. Some examples of the agencies commonly connected with refund reductions are; Child Support Unemployment and Outstanding Student Loans. Hi John, If your refund is different/lower from the amount stated on your tax return as you prepared it then you will get a letter. Sometimes outstanding debts will cause a refund adjustment. This can happen on the Federal and/or State refund. In either case a letter stating the reason for change will be sent to you from the taxing agency. The notification can show up after the refund. I went on your FREE site…entered very BASIC info…I am a college studednt with a W-2 earnings less than $5000.00 from my Summer Internship in NYC. After completing info, you site is now telling me that I have to UPGRADE and PAY $119.95 for your Deluxe package…WHY? Reply

I am 66 years old and have filed the last 2 years with Turbo Tax free edition (both Fed & State), and it’s been great. I’m not sure if your age is a factor, but definitely your Income is because the Max income is in the 34,000 range to qualify for free edition. So its for low income customers.
