Recovering from a natural disaster is challenging, and navigating your tax obligations during this time can add extra stress. If you were affected by a federally declared disaster, the Internal Revenue Service may have extended certain tax deadlines and provided additional relief to help ease your financial burden. Keep in mind that tax extensions and relief options can vary based on your state and county. Alabama Federal The Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in the entire state of Alabama that were affected by Hurricane Helene that began on Sept. 22, 2024. These taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. State State level tax relief is on a case-by-case basis and affected taxpayers should contact the Alabama Department of Revenue to request relief. Alaska Federal The Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in Alaska that were impacted by flooding that began on Aug. 5, 2024. These taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. To qualify for tax relief individuals and households must reside or have business in the city and borough of Juneau. State The state of Alaska does not have an individual income tax. California Federal The Internal Revenue Service issued tax relief for individuals and businesses in Los Angeles County that were affected by wildfires and straight-line winds that began on January 7, 2025. These taxpayers now have until October 15, 2025 to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. State The California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) provided state disaster tax relief for taxpayers and businesses affected by the wild fires in Los Angeles County. These affected taxpayers will be granted a postponement to October 15, 2025 to file California 2024 tax returns and make any tax payments that would have been due between January 7, 2025 through October 15, 2025. Florida Federal The Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in all of Florida that were affected by Hurricane Milton that began on Oct. 5, 2024 now have until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. State The state of Florida does not have an individual income tax. Georgia Federal The Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in the entire state of Georgia that were affected by Hurricane Helene that began on Sept. 24, 2024. These taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. State The Georgia Department of Revenue extended tax relief to victims of Hurricane Helene. Following the aftermath, affected individuals and businesses that have a 2024 income tax return normally due during March or April 2025 now have until May 1, 2025. Experts available 5am – 8pm PST – 7 days a week Chat with an expert Kentucky Federal The Internal Revenue Service issued tax relief for individuals and businesses in the entire state of Kentucky affected by severe storms, straight-line winds, flooding, and landslides that began on Feb. 14, 2025. These taxpayers now have until Nov. 3, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. The Nov. 3, 2025, deadline applies to 2024 individual income tax returns and payments normally due on April 15, 2025. The Nov. 3 deadline also applies to 2024 contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts for eligible taxpayers. Moreover, this relief also applies to the estimated tax payments normally due on April 15, June 16, and Sept. 15, 2025. Penalties on payroll and excise tax deposits due on or after Feb. 14, 2025, and before March 3, 2025, will be abated as long as the tax deposits are made by March 3, 2025. State At this time the Kentucky Department of Revenue has not released an announcement for tax relief relating to the severe storms, straight-line winds, flooding, and landslides that began on Feb. 14, 2025. North Carolina Federal The Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in the entire state of North Carolina that were affected by Hurricane Helene that began on Sept. 25, 2024. These taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025 to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make payments. This May 1, 2025 extension deadline also applies for filing 2024 returns. State The North Carolina Department of Revenue’s state tax relief will remove certain penalties assessed against affected taxpayers for licenses, returns, or payments due on September 25, 2024 through May 1, 2025 if the license is obtained, return is filed, the tax is paid by May 1, 2024. South Carolina Federal Following the disaster declaration, the Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in the entire state of South Carolina that were affected by Hurricane Helene that began on Sept. 25, 2024. These taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. This May 1 deadline also applies to filing 2024 returns and paying any tax due. State In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the South Carolina Department of Revenue granted relief to all 46 South Carolina counties. Several returns and payments originally due between September 25, 2024 and May 1, 2025 are now due May 1, 2025. The relief will automatically be provided to affected taxpayers, not action is required. This May 1 deadline applies to 2024 income tax returns from individuals, businesses, and tax-exempt organizations, including business income tax returns originally due March 15, 2025, and Individual Income Tax returns and payments originally due April 15, 2025. Tennessee Federal The Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in parts of Tennessee that were affected by Tropical Storm Helene that began on Sept. 26, 2024. These taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. Individuals and households that reside or have a business in Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Sevier, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties qualify for tax relief. State The state of Tennessee does not have an individual income tax. Virginia Federal The Internal Revenue Service provided tax relief for individuals and businesses in parts of Virginia that were affected by post-Hurricane Helene conditions that began on Sept. 25, 2024. These taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. The May 1, 2025 deadline is also the deadline for filing any calendar-year 2024 individual or business return normally due during March or April 2025, and paying any tax due. Individuals and households that reside or have a business in City of Albemarle, Appomattox, Bedford, Bland, Botetourt, Bristol City, Buchanan, Buckingham, Carroll, Charlotte, Covington City, Craig, Danville City, Dickenson, Floyd, Galax, Giles, Grayson, Greene, Lee, Madison, Montgomery, Nelson, Norton City, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Pulaski, Radford City, Roanoke City, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe counties qualify for tax relief. State The Virginia Department of Revenue will provide extensions and penalty and interest waivers for individual and fiduciary taxpayers who are unable to meet their income tax filing and payment obligations due to Hurricane Helene. The relief applies to taxpayers located in Virginia localities listed as designated areas eligible for disaster assistance by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Impacted taxpayers do not need to take action. These extensions and waivers are automatic as long as the missing returns and payments are made by June 1, 2025. West Virginia Federal The Internal Revenue Service provided tax relief for individuals and businesses in parts of West Virginia that were affected by post-Hurricane Helene conditions that began on Sept. 25, 2024. These taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. The May 1, 2025 deadline is also the deadline for filing any calendar-year 2024 individual or business return normally due during March or April 2025, and paying any tax due. Individuals and households that reside or have a business in Mercer County qualify for tax relief. State The West Virginia Tax Division office has not announced post-Hurricane Helene specific tax relief. However taxpayers may request an extension in West Virginia to coincide with IRS disaster tax relief and request an extension to file and pay various. Looking for more information about state taxes?
