IRS Free File Program is Open

TurboTax News IRS Free File Program Is Now Open

Today the IRS announced that its Free File Program is now available at www.irs.gov. The IRS Free File Program is a public-private partnership that provides free tax preparation and filing services for eligible taxpayers at no cost to the taxpayer or the government. As a founding member of the Free File Alliance, Intuit is proud to have provided free tax preparation to millions of Americans over two decades. Last year alone, 1.2 million taxpayers filed for completely free using the TurboTax IRS Free File offer.

This year, taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $36,000 or less, military personnel (including the National Guard and reserves) with adjusted gross income of $69,000 or less, or those who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit can prepare and file their federal and state tax returns for free with the IRS Free File program delivered by TurboTax. TurboTax makes its Free File program offering available to the maximum number of eligible taxpayers allowed by the IRS. Other taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $69,000 or less may visit www.IRS.gov to find offers from other providers that they may be eligible for.

Participating in the IRS Free File program is part of Intuit’s broader efforts to help more Americans file their taxes for free, with approximately 13 million absolutely free returns filed with Intuit software last year alone. Over the last five years, approximately 55 million returns have been filed free of charge with Intuit, more than all other tax prep software companies combined.

Please note, Intuit provides two free tax filing offerings.

The IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax is subject to income limits and offers free filing, regardless of tax return complexity. It is only offered through the IRS Free File program. No upgrades (including TurboTax Live) are available.

TurboTax Free Edition is not subject to income limits but only handles simple returns. Upgrades and add-ons, such as TurboTax PLUS and Audit Defense, are available.

  1. Hello. My father passed in August of 2015 and we completed and filed his 2015 taxes using your turbotax program. We have received a small amount of earnings (less than $200.00)from a stock sale and earned interest in 2016 for his estate. We have no other earnings. Do we need to file a return for 2016? Thank you for your response.
