Intuit TurboTax Commitment to Free Tax Preparation

TurboTax News TT_Blog Header

Recently, some have accused Intuit of deceptive practices designed to discourage consumers from filing their taxes for free. These accusations are simply not true. We believe our actions were both appropriate and consistent with our core operating value — integrity without compromise.

Our commitment to offering free tax preparation services, including through the IRS Free File Program, is demonstrated by the vast number of taxpayers who have used and enjoyed our products. Any suggestion that we are not committed to or thwart people’s efforts to file their taxes for free is wrong.

At Intuit, our mission is to Power Prosperity Around the World. One way we do that is by empowering people to make the most of the tax time moment by helping them file their taxes, including those filing at no charge.

Preparing and filing taxes is the one time of year when individuals and families understand in detail how much money they made and how much they paid in taxes. It is the moment to get the clearest picture of one’s true financial health. Still, many taxpayers lack confidence in their ability to file taxes accurately. That’s why Intuit is in the tax business.

We offer taxpayers outstanding software solutions, tax assistance and assurance, and tax education. Each year, we help taxpayers put approximately $68 billion in tax refunds back into their pockets. We are proud to have earned the trust of our customers by delivering benefits taxpayers want and products they love, empowering them to manage their financial lives.

As part of this long-standing commitment, Intuit has been a leader in making free tax software available. In fact, over the course of nearly two decades, more people have filed their taxes for free using a TurboTax product than any other.

As a founding member of the Free File Alliance, we are committed to IRS Free File’s shared goals of growing the program and providing more free tax filings to those that need it most.

We are also devoted to growing total free tax preparation for taxpayers, regardless of their filing preference.

Yet we can always do more, partnering with the IRS and Free File Alliance to raise awareness of free tax preparation and empowering taxpayers financially. With millions of taxpayers filing their taxes for free with TurboTax, both in our commercial free offering as well as through the IRS Free File Program, we are helping taxpayers get every dollar they earned and rightfully deserve.

    1. Hello Mary,

TurboTax does not issue or track refunds. The IRS issues all refunds.

If you have an IRS acknowledgement then they are processing the return. If the return has been accepted then check the status of the tax refund via IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool, https://www.irs.gov/refunds.

Please note you will need the following information when checking on your refund status:
      Social security number or ITIN
      Your filing status
      Your exact refund amount

For the Turbo Prepaid Visa® Card –
If you have any questions or need assistance with your Turbo Prepaid Visa Card, visit TurboPrepaidCard.com
      or call toll-free at (888) 285-4169.

Here is more information on how to track your refund.

    1. Hi Alcario,

To access your prior year tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the user ID you used to create the account – https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section; Your tax returns & documents click on Show.
      Click on the Year
      Click on Download/print return (PDF)

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF’s will be on the computer where the return was created. TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

      Thank you
