Drew’s Story
Montana is a land of many lands. You start on the east side where it’s all prairies and grassfields and you come into western Montana and it’s jagged peaks. They have a litle bit of everything.
The trees here can be really dense and thick, but at times they can open up into these massive expanses of grass and sky. It’s something that I try to keep appreciating every day.
My name’s Drew and I’m based here in Bozeman, Montana. I work at a bike shop and also do single-pitch instructing climbing here in the Gallatin Valley.
All of these outdoor sports are a form of free expression. You can show yourself however you want to and feel that freedom through motion. It’s something that we all gravitate towards and it’s really cool once you find that niche that you really feel like you’re being yourself.
I always try to look for that feeling where climbing feels effortless. You inevitably start out with a little bit of jitters. It’s one thing to fight your body and how tired you are but it’s a whole other thing to get your mind into the right headscape. Then hopefully you hit this moment of euphoria. That’s when you feel like you can just keep climbing and climbing and you wished that 70-meter rope never ended.
I mean, this is my life. This is what I live for so if you ask what’s important to me, I love pursuing this idea of outdoor recreation to the max. I’ve been snowboarding my whole life, I’ve been biking and climbing my whole life but there’s a point where I’ve made it my life. That’s why I came here to Bozeman.
For me, I realized that to go do the things I want to do, I have to get my taxes done with first. I don’t want some looming thing that I’m thinking about to take away from that moment. I like to set up my life in a way where I can really be mindful and present.
Now that I have TurboTax and a live expert to help me through it, I can get back to doing what I love to do and not worry about, how am I going to get these taxes done?
Growing up, I had to teach myself a lot about building, design and fixing things. It’s been really valuable for me to give that back to people as well. It’s part of the reason why I volunteer at a non-profit called, Bike Kitchen.
Being in the Bike Kitchen, I’m used to working with bikes from the 80’s up until now. So it’s all a variety of parts, compatibility and design. It’s really interesting to work with kids, families and teach them how to restore their bike.
In a way, we all just want to share our experiences with others, whether it’s teaching each other insights or showing another perspective about life. And it’s fun! I tell people, “Hey, this morning I did this trail and loved it. Here are the conditions, this is why I’d recommend it.” When people feel that energy from someone else, it’s infectious. They start getting excited. They start having these feelings like, “Damn, I want to go out.” It’s fun to share that.
We can all provide value in different ways but I think some of the hardest value to provide is just putting a smile on someone’s face. It’s not something you can pay money and have done. You have to put in the effort to make someone else happy.
