It’s National Donut Day! Glad We Don’t Have Denmark’s Fat Tax

Taxes on items like cigarettes, soda, alcohol, and even marijuana called “sin taxes” have been imposed in the United States, but what about a “Fat Tax” on items containing certain levels of saturated fat? Could this happen in the United States? In the spirit of National Donut Day we wanted to share our infographic about Denmark and its “Fat Tax”. So before you chow down on a dozen donuts today, think about how much you would pay in taxes to enjoy those deep fried sugar confections if the United States approves such a tax.

25 Million Additional Taxpayers May Face the Dreaded AMT

In 1969 when the Alternative Minimum Tax was first implemented, it guaranteed that millionaires and high-income individuals who paid little to no income tax would have to pay a minimum amount of taxes. Over the years the number of individuals who fell into this category has grown, along with the total revenue. Different measures have been taken through the years, such as The Tax Reform Act of 1986 which eliminated the partial exclusion of capital gains, reducing overall revenue at the time, but helping individual taxpayers. With 2011 on the horizon, the potential number of additional AMT taxpayers will increase to 25 million, if the current legislation is not extended. The question is, should you fear the AMT?

In our third installment in our “Sin Tax” series, we take a look at the potential revenue impacts of regulating and taxing marijuana. The U.S. spends about $12 billion dollars per year prosecuting marijuana offenders, which are 47% of all of all drug arrests, with roughly one-third of all crimes being non-violent and drug related. Additionally, another $150 million is spent per year on policing drugs each year. In the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression, many have pointed to increased legalization or decriminalization of marijuana as being an untapped resource for taxation, and a source of new small business growth and employment. It is estimated that nearly $1 billion per year could be generated in marijuana production upon nationwide legalization with a flat 10% tax on producers. This, of course, coupled with a significant drop in the cost of policing and prosecuting the use of marijuana could lead to net savings.

It’s no secret that the government taxes our spending– in fact, sales tax is one of the main ways that the government brings in money. But there are a number of other items that have their own additional taxes imposed, whether at the state or federal level. And, when it comes to cigarettes, the consumer pays both. Would it be right to call this a tax on one’s vice, or sin? While we don’t claim to be any moral authority, the figures and statistics are quite interesting.

Staying timely, with the IRS announcement that e-file is officially open, this image shows how people are filing their taxes. Last year, taxpayers e-filed a record 95 million tax returns, about two-thirds of all individual federal returns filed. Consumer use of do-it-yourself tax software and online tax preparation Web sites, such as TurboTax, was up 20 percent last year, making tax software the fastest-growing tax preparation choice. Check out the TurboTax press release announcing the kick off of tax season for more information.
