Affordable Care Act Requires Americans Take a More Active Role in Health Care Decisions

TurboTax offers free online tool to help people understand impact of new health care reform

SAN DIEGO – March 28, 2013 – In a series of nationwide focus groups conducted by Intuit TurboTax®, a majority of consumers who participated lacked awareness of their new health insurance options under the Affordable Care Act, sometimes referred to as “Obamacare”. In addition, most of them did not know if they would qualify for financial assistance to help cover the cost of health insurance.

In October 2013, federal and state Health Insurance Marketplaces are scheduled to open and an estimated 30 million uninsured Americans will need to make healthcare decisions that will impact both their personal and financial well being.

TurboTax now provides a simple, free online health care calculator, available on the TurboTax Blog, that helps people understand whether they may be eligible to purchase insurance through the new Marketplaces and if they qualify for financial assistance.

“Consumers who take a more active role in their healthcare decisions get the best outcome for both their health and their wallet,” explains Jane Sarasohn-Kahn, Health Economist (www.healthpopuli.com) and Advisor to the American Tax & Financial Center at TurboTax. “We encourage Americans to be engaged in their healthcare decisions starting now.  Research shows that Americans spend much more time researching the purchase of an automobile compared with seeking information on picking their personal physician.  Isn’t it worth investing a few hours over the next few months to get the best health care for you and your family?”

Balancing care and out of pocket expenses

The need to engage now in healthcare is especially critical for individuals and families who will fund health insurance through a combination of government subsidy (delivered as a tax credit starting in 2015) and monthly out of pocket expenses.

Based on analysis by the American Tax & Financial Center at TurboTax, a family of four earning roughly $50,000 would be eligible for an estimated $7,500 subsidy beginning in 2014, which would cover approximately 70 percent of their insurance premium.  In this case, the family would be responsible for paying the remaining monthly premium of approximately $282 per month.

“The majority of families need to understand this will likely impact their monthly budget in some way,” added Sarasohn-Kahn. “U.S. consumers need to take on the role of ‘health consumers’ as they assume more responsibilities for choosing health plans based on the level of services covered by a health plan compared to the costs of the premiums and copayments under the different plans being considered.”

For the estimated 40 percent of households living paycheck-to-paycheck, the additional monthly payment for healthcare may seem out of reach.  However, families will need to weigh the benefits of preventive care, and the potential costs of emergencies and existing chronic conditions managed by people in their families.  In 2010, the average cost of an emergency room visit was $1,349.

TurboTax Offers Last Minute Tax Tips

to Save Time and Money

IRS Opens E-file Today

Taxpayers can file with confidence with TurboTax

            SAN DIEGO – Jan. 30, 2013 – As the Internal Revenue Service officially opens e-file today, giving the green light to U.S. taxpayers to begin filing their tax returns, TurboTax® confirmed it is up to date with current tax laws so Americans can file with confidence and be sure they’re getting every tax deduction and credit they deserve.

IRS Now Accepting E-filed Returns

The IRS begins accepting the majority of e-filed tax returns today, good news for taxpayers who have been waiting to file their return and claim their refund. Last year, 80 percent of taxpayers got a federal tax refund that averaged $2,700, according to IRS.

The IRS has recently announced that it will not begin processing tax returns claiming the American Opportunity Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit on Form 8863 until mid-February.  This delay applies to all tax preparation methods.  Taxpayers claiming these credits can prepare their tax return now with TurboTax and be confident they’re getting the full amount they’re entitled to. TurboTax will submit these returns as soon as the IRS begins accepting them.

The IRS expects to issue more than 9 out of 10 refunds in less than 21 days upon acceptance. The fastest way for taxpayers to get their refund is with e-file and direct deposit.

Court Denies Attempt to Pull Intuit’s TurboTax Ad

            SAN DIEGO – Jan. 29, 2013 – Intuit Inc. (Nasdaq: INTU) responded today to a decision by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri denying H&R Block’s effort to stop Intuit from continuing to air two television advertisements for TurboTax.

This statement can be attributed to Dan Maurer, general manager and senior vice president of Intuit’s Consumer Tax Group.

“We are very pleased with today’s decision and will continue to vigorously defend these truthful ads.

“These two TurboTax advertisements factually and accurately portray the tax expertise of TurboTax experts, who are all CPAs, IRS Enrolled Agents and tax attorneys. This stands in sharp contrast to the prior tax experience of some of those who major tax stores advertise for and hire.

“While experience may vary at tax stores, the truth is, major tax stores actively advertise for and hire tax preparers who have no prior tax experience.

“It is unfortunate, but not surprising, that H&R Block doesn’t want taxpayers to know this. As a consumer-focused company, we want to ensure U.S. taxpayers get the facts so they can make an informed choice for their tax preparation needs.

“In the last three years, H&R Block has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising trying to convince the American public that they need to go to a tax store to have their return prepared.

            SAN DIEGO – Jan. 24, 2013 – An estimated 25 percent of qualified workers fail to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit each year, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The credit, which could be worth up to $5,800 for a family of four, is among the most commonly overlooked tax credits.

The EITC Finder, created by Intuit Inc. (Nasdaq: INTU), maker of TurboTax®, is a free smartphone app that makes determining eligibility easy. The EITC Finder is available in both English and Spanish on the App Store, Android Market and Amazon App Store .

Designed for lower and middle-income taxpayers who can access the Internet on their smart phones, the EITC Finder asks a few simple questions, such as “Are you married or single?” and “How many children do you support?” to determine eligibility. If the individual qualifies for the EITC, the app estimates the possible state and federal refund.

The majority of taxpayers claiming the EITC are eligible for free tax preparation.  Taxpayers can prepare and file their return online at no cost through the Free File program at www.irs.gov. TurboTax Freedom Edition is available to anyone with adjusted gross income of $31,000 or less or those on active military duty with adjusted gross income of $57,000 or less and those who qualify for the EITC. In addition, taxpayers who choose the TurboTax Freedom Edition can also prepare and file state returns in 23 states at no additional costs.

National EITC Awareness Day is Jan. 25

National Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day, recognized on January 25, is an initiative that educates eligible taxpayers about the EITC and reminds them that they must file a tax year 2012 return to claim the credit.

The EITC is for people who work, but have low wages. Anyone with earnings under $50,000 should see if they qualify. In addition to reducing the amount of taxes owed, the EITC may also produce a tax refund. More than 27 million taxpayers received nearly $62 billion in earned income tax credits for the 2011 tax year.

“The EITC puts money back where it’s needed the most, in the hands of hardworking people,” said Bernie McKay, director of the American Tax & Financial Center at TurboTax. “We urge eligible taxpayers to claim this credit. Intuit Responds to Court Decision Barring IRS

From Regulating Tax Preparers

            SAN DIEGO – Jan. 22, 2013 – Intuit Inc. (Nasdaq: INTU) responded today to a decision of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia that prevents the Internal Revenue Service from regulating non-professional tax return preparers.

The ruling, issued Jan. 18, could affect up to 700,000 tax return preparers who won’t have to obtain credentials, ranging from independent preparers to employees at national storefronts, such as H&R Block.

The following statement can be attributed to Dan Maurer, senior vice president and general manager of Intuit’s Consumer Tax Group:

TurboTax Research Finds Early Filers Use Money to Pay Debt, Afford Everyday Living Expenses
 
SAN DIEGO – Jan. 15, 2013 – The nation’s taxpayers will receive an estimated $230 billion in federal tax refunds this year, fueling the U.S. economy and delivering a significant financial windfall to the average American household. And approximately $140 billion will be in consumers’ pockets by Feb. 15, according to the American Tax & Financial Center at TurboTax (www.americantaxandfinancialcenter.com).

Refunds are especially vital for the estimated 40 percent of U.S. households living paycheck-to-paycheck. In 2012, the average tax refund averaged $2,700, equaling more than a month’s worth of income for two-thirds of taxpayers or more than three months of groceries for the average family of four.

       “A federal tax refund is the most important financial moment of the year for many families,” said Bernie McKay, director of the American Tax & Financial Center at TurboTax. “Low-income households use tax withholding and the subsequent refund almost like a savings fund, using the money to pay down debt or to cover everyday living expenses.

 Refunds are the primary reason taxpayers file returns by mid-February. According to research by TurboTax®, the nation’s leading tax preparation software from Intuit Inc. (Nasdaq: INTU), approximately 84 percent of taxpayers filing in Jan. through Feb. 15 receive a tax refund, compared to only half of those who file in April.

Holiday Spending Hangover
Tax refunds take on even greater significance in the face of holiday spending and credit card debt. In 2012, Americans planned to spend an average of $854 during the holidays, adding to the average consumer credit card debt of $8,721.

Consumers typically make the largest dent in their credit card debt in the first quarter of the calendar year, fueled by the increase in income due to tax refunds. The average tax refund could cut almost one-third of the average credit card debt.

How taxpayers plan to use their tax refund
According to TurboTax, 42 percent of early tax filers plan to use their tax refund to pay down debt and cover the costs of rent, food and utilities. Another 25 percent will save at least some of their tax refund.

     “Taxpayers can use a portion of their refund to pay down debt as a smart first step to taking control of their finances,” added McKay.  “And it’s encouraging that at least a quarter of Americans say they plan to save at least some of their tax refund.  Tax refunds are an excellent way to jumpstart savings and put money away for retirement, education or a rainy day. ”

IRS Begins Accepting E-filed Returns on Jan. 30

            SAN DIEGO – Jan. 8, 2013 – Despite a later than expected start to the 2013 tax filing season, taxpayers shouldn’t delay and can prepare and file their tax returns now with TurboTax. The vast majority of tax filers, including those paying the Alternative Minimum Tax, can prepare and file now and be first in line to get their refunds when the IRS begins processing returns on January 30.

Three California Cities Make Top 10 in the TurboTax Annual List of Late Filers

SAN DIEGO – March 28, 2012 – San Francisco claims the top spot on the TurboTax annual list of America’s most tax procrastinating cities. With more than 40 percent of residents waiting until the last two weeks to file their taxes in 2011, the city jumped five notches from its standing the previous year.

San Francisco isn’t the only California city on the list of late-filing cities. The state is well represented, with both Los Angeles and San Diego landing in this year’s top 10.

There’s good news for the 28 percent of taxpayers nationwide who wait until the last two weeks of tax season to file their tax returns: They get two extra days to file federal returns, until April 17.

Here’s the full list of this year’s late-filing cities compiled by TurboTax, the nation’s leading tax preparation software from Intuit Inc. (Nasdaq: INTU), with last year’s ranking in parenthesis:

1.     San Francisco – (No. 6): Famous for the Golden Gate Bridge, “The City by the Bay” claims procrastination gold with more than 40 percent of its residents waiting until the last two weeks to file.

2.     New York – (No. 3): This fast-paced city obviously isn’t fast when it comes to their taxes. With over 38 percent of its residents waiting to file, what is the “City That Never Sleeps” doing with all that extra time?

3.     Washington D.C. – (No. 12): Being the home of the IRS, you would think that The District’s residents would be the first to file their taxes. This year they find themselves at No. 3 on the list.

4.     Los Angeles – (No. 9): Angelinos must be too busy casting votes for Idol to file their taxes; they are on the top 10 list for the fifth consecutive year.

5.     Seattle – (No. 7): With the rainy winter weather, more than 30 percent of Emerald City residents must not be feeling up to doing their taxes, moving up two spots from last year.

6.     Austin – (No. 4): Texans must be tired of waiting for their refunds. After carrying the Top Procrastinating City title for six years in a row, Austin is Texas’s only top 10 city this year.

7.     Minneapolis – (First timer!): So many theaters, so little time! The Twin Cities must be too busy theater hopping instead of hopping to start those taxes!

8.     Denver – (First timer!): The Mile High City may have spent more time cheering during football season than preparing to file their taxes.

9.     San Diego – (No. 8): Having TurboTax headquarters right around the corner must be helping; San Diegans are filing their taxes faster than the year before, moving down one slot.

10.  Portland – (No. 13): Residents of the Rose City may be too busy smelling the roses, moving up from No. 13 for last year with over 28 percent of their residents waiting until the end of the tax season to file.

Last-minute Tax Tips for Procrastinators

Taxpayers who have waited until the last minute to file their taxes don’t need to worry.  There are fast, easy and even free ways to prepare and file until the deadline looms. And ways to make sure they get their maximum refund.

• Go online – It’s easy, convenient and fast. Many taxpayers can finish in less than an hour. And for those people with a simple tax return, it could even be free. Go to turbotax.com to start today.
• ItsDeductible – Don’t forget charitable contributions. This includes cash and non-cash – household items such as clothing, electronics and toys that were donated. For those taxpayers that itemize, these donations can add up to tax savings. Mileage to and from charitable events, even babysitter fees while volunteering, can be deductible too.
• Sock it away – Contribute to an IRA. In the rush to file, don’t miss on opportunities to reduce that tax bill. Even procrastinators can save money on their taxes, they have until the April 17 deadline to contribute to an IRA and get a deduction on their 2011 return.
• Extend the deadline – Taxpayers that aren’t going to make the deadline need to file a tax extension, free with TurboTax. And remember: An extension to file isn’t an extension to pay. Taxes owed are still due April 17.

With 302,000 new homes sold and interest rates dropping in 2011 there are many people who have questions about the tax implications of refinancing their home. If that’s you, there may be some good news.  If the mortgage is your principal residence, you generally can only deduct, over the life of the new loan, the points you paid to refinance the loan. If the mortgage is a rental property, you may be able to deduct additional charges in connection with securing the loan like underwriting fees, appraisal fees, and attorney fees.

• Is my social security income taxable?

There are 78 million boomers nearing or already enjoying the benefits of retirement.  First, congratulations!  Second, if social security is the only income received then that income is not taxable. However if you receive other types of income, some of your social security benefits may be taxable.
