Who doesn’t love a three-day weekend? That extra day is so great, you probably wish every weekend lasted three days. But then again, if every one was three days long, there wouldn’t be anything special about a three-day weekend.
And it’s hard to find a more special three-day weekend than Memorial Day Weekend. Every town across America is abuzz with national pride and gratitude. The stars and stripes will be flying from sea to shining sea.
It’s a time to get out, take a family trip, eat some good food, spend some time with good friends, go see a part of America, and enjoy the celebration of our country. But all that fun doesn’t have to drain your bank account.
Here are some ways to have fun this Memorial Day weekend (or any weekend for that matter) without any financial regrets on Tuesday morning.
Plan Ahead for Memorial Day
It’s great to be spontaneous. But sometimes, spontaneity turns into an empty wallet or a worn out credit card. Whatever you plan to do for Memorial – don’t forget to plan. Some of us will plan meticulously, others will have a rough draft of an idea. Either way, plan out your activity or trip to help keep your budget in check.
Spend Smart This Memorial Day
With every national holiday comes the Sales Marketing Juggernaut. You can’t go 5 minutes without seeing or hearing about a Doorbuster Price Slash Memorial Madness Early Bird deal. Of course I’m being facetious, but the truth is we are hypnotized by sales.
Finding a discount on something you need is a great way to save money. Spending money on items you would never have thought about purchasing if it weren’t for this weekend’s mega-sale isn’t technically “Saving” money. It’s just getting a deal on something you wouldn’t have bought otherwise.
Whether it’s clothes, shoes, cars, coupons, cruises, or just plain old fun, stand strong against the sale and spend wisely this weekend.
Check Your Local Listings
There is a good chance that something exciting for the whole family is happening in your town this Memorial Day weekend – at little or no cost. Or any weekend for that matter. Open the newspaper, go to your town’s website, or ask your friends about events and activities happening near you. You don’t have to travel long distances to have loads of excitement.
Camp and Swim This Memorial Day
A frugal camper is a tent camper. Sure, you could rent an impressive RV, but you’ll pay a premium for it too. Instead, try roughing it (in a safe way, of course).
Get out to a nearby campground, pitch a tent, go on a hike, enjoy the beauty of America, get a fire going, and make some memories. Find a lake, a pool, or an ocean, and swim away your day in the cool water. Accept for the price of a floating noodle, swimming might just the the most cost-efficient way to a fun weekend.
Far Away Home
You don’t always have to go out to have a good time. Stoke the grill, put up Christmas lights in the backyard, setup a projector or TV outside and have an amazingly different night “in”.
Or you could cozy up to your favorite show and have a binge-watching movie marathon. Better yet, invite your foodie friends over for an old-fashioned potluck meal, or recreate any of those cooking reality shows in your own kitchen with some brave contestants.
Whatever your motivation happens to be this weekend, remember that you don’t have to go into debt to find excitement. Find the best deals, spend wisely, and keep your eye on the prize – fun and relaxation.
