Ana Rosales is a 38- year-old mother of three who is uninsured and who wonders about the type of health care coverage available and the costs of participating in the Affordable Care Act’s insurance exchanges, which begin operating on Oct. 1.

To help Rosales and the 50 million other uninsured Americans facing important health care decisions, TurboTax has created TurboTax AnswerXchange, a first-of-its-kind social community designed to give you personalized, unbiased answers to your Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare,” questions.

TurboTax AnswerXchange combines the expertise of tax and health care professionals and the personal experience of peers to deliver exactly what you need – a simple, actionable answer for your particular situation.

Unlike other online question and answer forums that exist today, the TurboTax AnswerXchange is an independent community dedicated to helping you make health insurance decisions with confidence.

Here’s how the TurboTax AnswerXchange works:

  • You’ll start by completing a few simple questions: marital status, age, children, income and state of residence.
  • To help you make an informed decision that meets your health care needs and budget, the AnswerXchange will automatically show you an estimate of how much the government will pay for your health insurance if you qualify. It also shows you the penalty amount if you choose not to purchase health insurance.
  • The AnswerXchange has a clear, simple design that makes it easy to find and view questions and answers relevant to your specific situation. You can also sign up to follow individual questions or topic areas, as well as other users. If you don’t find an answer related to your specific situation from the thousands of questions already in the AnswerXchange you can submit your question and get your own personalized answer.

Whether you’re single, a member of the military, have a large family with children, or recently married, the AnswerXchange can help you find answers to your questions around health care and insurance plans, all tailored to your family income, location, and health needs.

  5. I have finished my son’s tax return and when I get to the part where it has been checked and ready to e-file or mail. When I try to check to e-file a little green circle comes up and just continues to go round and round. What is my problem? Thanks.

    • Hi Linda,
Congratulations on finishing. Can you save and come back in and see if you still get the “spinner”. If you do get the “spinner” after saving and coming back can you let us know if you are also filing your state tax return and are you in TurboTax Online?
      Thank you,

  6. If I have a balance due for 2014 exclusive of any fine or penalty for not having health insurance, I will not have the fine or penalty added to my existing balance due. The IRS will only collect any fine or penalty if I have a refund correct?

  7. i have medicare but work full tme, my husband is retired with no medicare and is on my insurance plan, will i have to get separate insurance for him?

  8. When I filed my 2012 taxes (in Feb 2013), I found that I had to report the amount of money that my employer paid for my heathcare insurance. If Obamacare does not affect my taxes (if I have insurance), then why did I have to report this? Will there be taxes in future years based on what my employer pays for my insurance?

  9. I am married, over 65, have medicare advantage program, all income is from my sources and above the subsidy level. My wife is retired with no income and, not over 65, without medical coverage. Since we file jointly, would we still be eligible for a subsidy to pay for her mandatory health coverage? Or should we start filing seperately?

    • Hi Merritt,
You wife should go to the marketplace to see what insurance options are available to her. She will need to report the household income. Married couples who file separate returns are not eligible for the tax credits or subsidies.

  10. I am uninsured and my only income is from my pension plan, which will last only for the next five (5) years. Is the money I get from my pension plan considered income?

  11. I work as a nanny and pay for my own insurance through ABCBS. I have a &1,250 deductible.

They send me a letter stating 9/26/13 that they are going to let me go as of 1/1/14, and that they will soon be sending me a booklet with more detailed information and my options. They also gave me a number to call, but I thought maybe you could give me some in site of what is coming ahead for me, and is it legal for them to do this? I like my policy, expensive but a good one. I don’t want to leave it.
    Thanks for any input.

    • Hi Kathleen,
I am sorry you are losing your insurance. You will need to look to the Marketplace, or another private source for health care for 2014.

  12. I am single w/no income but social security and no health care. How much will my penalty be the first and second years if I do not take any plan through the marketplace?

    • Hi Leslie,
The penalty for not having health insurance is the greater of $95 or 1% of income for 2014 and increasing to 2% in 2015 and 2.5% in 2016.
You may qualify for assistance in paying for insurance through the marketplace.

  13. I own a small company, and have 2 health insurance policies, one through Blue Care Network, and another self-insured plan, a so-called Medical Reimbursement Plan, which essentially covers all other qualifying medical costs the BCN plans doesn’t. Is this still going to be legal under Obamacare?

  14. I am a retired teacher on disability. I purchase insurance through my former employer. I also have Medicare. Am I still eligible for lower insurance cost through the Affordable Health Care?
