Where’s my refund?

Announcements

Important IRS Update:  Some taxpayers who filed electronically and received an acknowledgement from the IRS are concerned when they visit “Where’s My Refund” and are told that IRS has no information regarding their tax return. The IRS informed us on February 10 that this is a temporary situation and should be resolved in several days.  At that time, you will be able to get an expected refund date when you visit “Where’s My Refund.”

This is an IRS issue and impacts returns regardless of who sends them in
to the IRS. This is not a TurboTax issue.

If you have received an acknowledgement of your tax return from the IRS, then the IRS assures us they have received your return and are processing it.

Information on the status of your refund will be updated in “Where’s My
Refund” once your return processes. This is a temporary situation, and we expect to resolve the matter in a few days.

IRS expects the vast majority of tax refunds to continue to be issued
within the historical range of 10 to 21 days.

The IRS has updated it’s Where’s My Refund site with additional FAQs: http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=254102,00.html

Good question. In fact, it’s one of the most common questions we get at TurboTax. And no wonder. If you’re getting money back, you obviously want to know when it’ll be in your bank account.

While the IRS explicitly states it doesn’t guarantee a specific date for depositing a refund, the general rule of thumb for e-filed returns with direct deposit is this: if you e-file your return by noon Thursdays, you’ll see your refund deposit the following Friday.

If you e-filed between Jan. 15 and Jan. 21 and opted for direct deposit, the IRS says it should be in your bank account on Jan. 29. If you chose to get a paper check, that will be mailed Feb. 5.

If you want a specific answer, just go to Where’s My Refund?

You’ll need to provide some simple information from your tax return:

•  Your Social Security Number (or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number)

•  Your Filing Status

•  The exact dollar amount of your refund

E-filers can get their refund information 72 hours after the IRS acknowledges your return has been accepted.

So, if you e-file your return on Jan. 30 and you’re still waiting for your refund on Feb. 30, you know there’s a problem. Time to give the IRS a jingle. You can get your refund status information by calling 1-800-829-1954 or 1-800-829-4477.

Does this mean we wont get our refund until 3 weeks after it was accepted (Feb.1) or 3 weeks after it’s been processed (Feb. 14 or later)??

    1. Hi Iris – Unfortunately the clock didn’t start until they resumed processing returns with Form 8863 on 2/14. Keep in mind, though, that it’s “within 21 days,” not “at least 21 days.” Hope that helps! –Christopher

  14. 3 months and still no refund, but recordings indicate it has “been processed”. The phone numbers 800 829 1954, 800-829-4477, 800 829 1040 are only recordings. You never talk to a person; and it is the same recording no matter which number is called. May be the last time I use Turbo Tax

    1. Hi Carol,
I am sorry about your refund issue. Many taxpayers have experienced IRS delays for tax year 2011 no matter what type of tax service they used. Did you check the IRS Where’s My Refund? tool. It should give you a date that your tax refund was processed. I would try the IRS “Where’s My Refund Tool?” if you haven’t already. 27. Useful information. Lucky me I found your site unintentionally, and I’m stunned why this twist of fate didn’t came about in advance! I bookmarked it.

  28. I filed my taxes with Liberty Tax on Feb 1st and it was accepted on Feb 2. The IRS wheres my refund said they had no information for weeks then finally gave me a date of March 6th. On March 6th no refund now it says it is being processed again. What the ???? This is very fustrating and no one has any information on anything except the IRS is having issues. Well they should not give you a date if they do not plan on giving you your money. This is misleading and people depend on there money.

  29. Well the thing is that I filed my return on 2/23 and the IRS site said it was DD on 3/5, I still don’t have it and now the IRS site says that no info is found, it’s a little worrisome especially since they said the money was DD to my account on the 5th not that it was “estimated” to be there.

  30. so i did my tax return with turbo tax on feb 27 i was told it ws gonna take 4 to 7 bussiness days it has now been 8 an still no tax refund i am unhappy with this an will not be makin the same mistake next year

  31. I will never use Turbo Tax again. Many of my friends filed online with other systems and have recieved their refund several weeks ago!

    1. Hi Charlotte,
Sorry for your frustration. The IRS is experiencing processing delays and it is an industry-wide issue not just TurboTax. If you check other sites as well as individual tax preparers they are experiencing the same issues. Please see the update from the IRS that may answer some of your questions and explain why some tax returns are delayed and some are not:

  32. On the where’s my refund on the IRS site it says it was DD on 5/5 but I still don’t have my money and the bank pretty much said “we don’t know” after talking to 3 different people…anyone else having similar issues?

  33. I e-filed on feb 25. my federal return was accepted the same day, i was given the date march 13th for my refund, but then it dropped to march 6th, its march the 8th now, and i know about the delays, i contacted the irs and they were no help what so ever, all they could say was four weeks after your taxes were accepted you could receive your tax refund. i have never had this problem before, usually when i e-file i get my taxes in about five days. this time i got the turbotax card to put my refund on. i just want the date of when i’ll get my refund, the wheres my refund tracker keeps saying the march of 6th. i do have bills to pay, and i had plans but they’re all shot to hades in a hand basket. those ‘delays’ are just signs of a bureaucrat failing the people….thanks irs…not turbotax’s fault its the irs..i’m just..VERY frustrated

  34. I filed my federal and state taxes on Feb. 25. I received notification that my federal tax return was accepted on Feb. 27, I then checked “where’s my refund” on Feb. 28, and it said my refund would be available on March 2. My state return went through my bank account on March 1. I checked on March 2 for federal, and it said due to delays in processing, my refund was postponed to March 6. I checked again on March 7 (today), and it said I should expect my refund on March 6… Yesterday. I checked my bank account, no pending transactions or anything. I went back to “where’s my refund”, and now it says I should check back in a week. Anybody have an idea of when I should receive my refund? I know the IRS only gives an estimate of when I should expect my refund, but this seems a little bit sketchy.

  35. I have not receive my turbo card yet, reason being i had the wrong address in my profile. Was advice to make corrections by calling 866-543-9160 or changing it in TurboTax Card website. Made corrections on the TurboTax Card website, was not able to make it by calling 866-543-9160. Well already made corrections through TurboTax Card website as of March 6, 2012. Don’t know if i should call and inform someone or just wait for my card to be mail to the corrected address.
