Disaster Victims – 1040 Filing Date May Be November 15th !
As we saw in the news, the month of
August this year, with various floods and storms, was certainly “disastrous” in
numerous states. Taxpayers affected by these disasters may be able to delay
filing their 1040 tax return until November.
The president can declare a major
disaster area as a “Presidential Disaster Area.” With such a declaration, taxpayers can get a
faster refund by claiming losses related to the disaster on the tax return for
the previous year, usually by filing an amended return. Also the IRS may extend
the due dates for their current returns and tax payments.
See the table below for the counties
that were declared as “Presidential Disaster Areas.” Also listed is the “new”
due date for filing returns and paying taxes with due dates falling on or after
the date of the disaster and November 15, 2007. If you live in one of these
areas or have a business located there, you are entitled to the extended due
dates.
If you filed Form 4868 to extend your
1040 filing date to October 15th (which falls between the two dates), you have
until November 15, 2007 to file your return. Note: you will not be able to
electronically file your return; you must mail it. Also, be sure to check your state website to see
if your filing date has been extended for your state return.
Here is a list of the areas and the
extended due dates.
